THE CATCH OF SOUTHWEST

Fishing along the Jetty or along the beach

   TIP:    EAT FRESHLY CAUGHT SEAFOOD

The most commonly caught fish along the Busselton Jetty are herring, skippy, gardies, tarwhine, crabs and squid, but sometimes from the end of the jetty bigger fish also can be caught such as bonito and southern bluefin tuna. If you have a heavy line and live squid as bait you can also catch big samson fish, mulloway, tuna, salmon and sharks from the end of the jetty. A mulloway hotspot is located half way along the jetty and Big John is usually caught near the pylons.

The best time to enjoy beach fishing is around sunrise and sunset and the shallow waters around the town can produce yellowfin whiting and herring. Not far offshore you also can find King George whiting and squid. Peppermint Beach, located north of Busselton, can be good for tailor, mulloway, whiting, flathead, flounder, skippy, crabs, squid and herring. Forrest beach has similar species to Peppermint Grove and after heavy rain the Wonnerup Inlet can bring mulloway and small sharks. Wonnerup Beach and Estuary during the day is good for small species like flathead, herring, skippy and whiting and after dark you can catch mulloway from the entrance to the estuary.

A variety of fishing charters go further off shore where you can find dhufish, pink snapper, baldchin groper and other fish species. Note that you can take home anything you catch subject to the size restrictions prescribed by the Department of Fisheries. The best time for fishing in the region is between mid December to mid May.
