Busselton has been working with the community and other organizations to provide events where spectators can enjoy this location as much as competitors. All these events welcome novice, experienced and elite athletes who have the opportunity to join different types of categories within the sport.Explore your limits and plan a trip to Busselton combining exercise and a family holiday.
These are the events which Busselton is proud to promote and be part of:
BUSSELTON JETTY SWIM: (February) This started in 1996 with 82 participants as a local event and today Busselton Jetty Swim receives participants from all over Australia with over 2000 competitors and an estimated 5000 spectators. The event has become very popular and as result the swim is held on Sunday, while on Saturday there is family entertainment with music, family races, a sand castle competition and a Celebrity Paddle Board Race. The Jetty Swim is 3.6km around Busselton Jetty and has 3 categories which include solo, teams of two and teams of four. This event is unique because the spectators can view the race around the iconic Busselton Jetty.
SUNSMART IRONMAN WESTERN AUSTRALIA BUSSELTON : (December) IRONMAN started in 1978 on the shores of Waikiki – Hawaii, with 15 competitors including the main organizer John Collins. John and his wife, Judy came up with the idea of combining the three toughest endurance races on the island into one race. Now this event is held throughout the world with 8 different types of races: IRONMAN, IRONMAN 70.3, Championships, Short Course Tri, Running, Cycling, IRONKIDS, MultiSport Tri. The Sunsmart Ironman WA racecourse distances in 2016 are: swim – 3.8km; bike – 180km; run -42.2km.
IRON MAN 70.3 BUSSELTON: (May) The SunSmart IRONMAN 70.3 Busselton event, formally the WA Long Course Triathlon Championships, found a new home in Busselton in 2002 after 17 years on Rottnest Island and a year at Margaret River. The racecourse distances in 2016 are: swim – 1.9km; bike – 90.1km; run -21.1km.
BUSSELTON HALF MARATHON: (February) The Busselton Runners Club Half Marathon & Fun Run has grown from 220 participants in 2009, the first year, to over 1100 participants in 2015. It includes a 21.1km half marathon, 10km and 5km events. The Charity Beneficiary for the 2016 event is the Busselton Volunteer Marine Rescue Group.
GEOGRAPHE BAY RACE WEEK: (February) Hosted by Port Geographe Marina in conjunction with the Royal Perth Yacht Club this event is suitable for all levels of sailing ability with six divisions from IRC Racing to Jib and Main Cruising. The race runs every year in the last week of February and draws more than 100 yachts every year.
“KING OF CONCRETE” NATIONAL LEVEL SKATEBOARD BOWL EVENT: (March) WA received the first skateboarding bowl riding championship after the City of Busselton invested in an extraordinary skatepark space. The event in 2016 had more than 50 participants from all over Australia.
